2020 Montauto Bianco di Pitigliano

$25.00

Maremma Toscana DOC
Bianco di Pitigliano is a 70/20/10 blend of trebbiano, grechetto, and malvasia grown in rocky clay at around 200m above sea level. Each grape brings its own characteristics to the wine, imparting acidity, juicy fruit, and — thanks especially to the malvasia — a gorgeous floral perfume. This lovely white makes a lip-smacking aperitivo and pairs beautifully with oysters and fish, lighter pastas, and chicken (or, most appropriately, rabbit).

Description

The grapes in our Montauto Bianco di Pitigliano come from vineyards that are from 10 to 30 years old in the southern part of the Grosseto province, in the inland parts of Maremma. The soil is predominantly clay and stone and the vineyards experience sharp temperature variations between day and night. The grapes are harvested in September, manually, to guarantee a careful selection. After harvest there is a soft pressing of the whole bunch of grapes. The grape varieties are vinified separately and settle for 36-48 hours. Fermentation follows the in bianco procedure, that is without any solid parts (skins and stalks) in stainless steel tanks at constant temperature of 16 °C.

The wine is clear and bright, with a straw-yellow color and light greenish shimmers. This is a wine with a very strong character, intense and ample on the nose, with fruity notes of white pulp fruits, citrus and light mineral tones. A drinkable white with a decisive, balanced flavor, with pronounced mineral tones and a savory freshness.

Montauto Winery

MontautoTenuta Montauto is in Manciano, Luisa’s hometown. Owner Riccardo Lepri was a classmate of Luisa’s, and his parents were her English teacher and driver’s ed instructor, so our history with them goes way back. The winery has been in the Lepre family for almost 60 years. (“Lepre” means “hare” in Italian, which is why you’ll see one on every label.) The vineyards are farmed organically and hand-harvested, with careful attention to quality at every stage of production.

Montauto makes wine in an old-school way, avoiding the “international style” of big, oaky, opaque wines that often lack a sense of place. By fermenting in stainless steel, or using a small amount of old oak, Montauto’s wines let the grapes express themselves clearly. Their careful selection and handling of the fruit results in elegant, food-friendly wines with distinctive characteristics from the volcanic soil and maritime microclimate of Maremma.

The estate enjoys excellent soil (clay rich in rocks such as quartz), and a proximity to the sea, both ideal for the production of great white wines. Great attention is placed on bringing cleanliness, freshness and minerality to the wine. Mantauto makes elegant, drinkable, healthy wines with low levels of sulphur, a defined aroma, and rich in natural complexity.
